Making a Fresh Start in the New Year

I hope everybody had a good Christmas and I happy new year!  I know my family has been really busy with all of the holiday hustle that has been happening.  life is finally starting to relax a bit and calm down and now I can focus on my candle making. To be honest I kind of gave up on selling candles for awhile.  I didn’t make any sales for quite awhile.  I decided I am going to make a fresh start.

Making a fresh start will include lowering the prices on my candles and also adding some new fragrances to my collected.  I am also getting a new design for the website that will hopefully get some more traffic and make customers want to stay on my page for awhile.  I can’t wait to see what this new year has in store for Red Fox Candle.

Onward With Candle Burn Testing

I am still in the process of testing my candles.  Its coming along nicely and I think I will finally be able to put product on my site in about a week.

I have decided on using cans for the candles instead of canning jars. They look a lot prettier in the new containers.

I have gotten a lot done this week for my webpage.  My husband has worked non stop on getting everything in order and looking nice.  I have also designed and ordered my labels and have received my business cards.

The only thing left to do is the coloring of the candles.  But even with that I have a pretty good idea on what I want them to look like.

Top 5 WordPress Anti-Spam Plugins for 2011

If you have had a blog for any time at all, you are well aware of the spam comments situation that exists will all forums and blogs.

While there are many solutions out there, I will try to highlight the ones that I have personally used and my experience with them.

1 ) AVH First Defense Against Spam

Link: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/avh-first-defense-against-spam/

AVH F.D.A.S. does a good job of preventing spammers from ever reaching any other plugin, and sometimes before even seeing the comment form. It works off of the “Stop Forum Spam”, “Project Honey Pot”, and “Spamhaus” blocklists. These blocklists help to identify previous spammers based on an IP address. If the visitor’s IP address scores high enough, it will be blocked. All of these settings are configurable for sensitivity. With any plugin that uses a blocklist, there is a possibility for false positives. I have not experienced this myself yet, and this plugin is #1 right now for my needs in preventing spam.

2 ) Akismet

Link: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/akismet/

Akismet still does a decent job of preventing spam, as is by far the most widely used plugin because it ships with most WordPress installs. It uses a score based system to identify spam based on visitor’s IP address, name, comment text, and probably some other identifiers as well. It does a pretty good job when used alongside of another plugin.

3 ) Defensio Anti-Spam

Link: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/defensio-anti-spam/

This plugin claims that it needs to be run stand-alone from other plugins. With my experience, it makes no sense to run Akismet and Defensio together since they both use the same type of algorithms and API to determine spam. I’d turn off Akismet when using this, but it could be used fine with most other plugins that do not use a scoring system to identify spam.

4 ) WP Recaptcha

Link: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-recaptcha/

Nothing thwarts comment spam bots like a good CAPTCHA system. This plugin adds a human input check on your comment form that must be correct before the form can be submitted.

5 ) Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin (G.A.S.P.)

Link: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/growmap-anti-spambot-plugin/

The idea behind this plugin is simple. It adds a checkbox that the user must check before they can submit the comment form. If bots try to submit without it being checked, they will be stopped on the server-side as well. Overall, this does a very good job of preventing automated spam bots. CommentLuv Premium includes this plugin as part of their paid plugin.

That’s it.. If there was a combination that I would use, I would pick AVH First Defense Against Spam and the Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin. If you wanted to be extra careful, you could include WP Recatpcha and then Akismet or Defensio for a final layer of defense. As always, when running more plugins, it does have a tendency to slow down your blog and admin dashboard as well.

Using CommentLuv to help launch a new blog

Well, this blog officially started a few days ago and thanks to CommentLuv Premium , the entire Red Fox Candle domain was indexed by Google within hours of launching. I completely give credit to this wonderful WordPress plugin for helping bring in our first subscribers and repeat visitors.

For those who are unfamiliar with ComLuv, it is a free WordPress plugin with a premium model as well. The free version does a good job with opening up your blog for higher quality comments, but this also entices spammers to your blog. The premium version helps to avoid this by only giving out quality links to visitors that share on other social sites, or comment multiple times (and are approved). Additionally, it includes multiple plugins in one, and has some extra automated spam deterrents built-in.

CommentLuv works by providing links to your commenter’s most recent blog posts, with the option for making them dofollow or not. This greatly increases visibility and backlinks, which helps out with SEO tremendously. Your comments on other blogs are also more likely to be approved because of the community the plugin has created. It’s really a win-win in almost every way you look at it.

So, I’d suggest that you head on over to CommentLuv and check it out. The premium version (used here) is well worth the price and it also opens your blogs up to premium features on every ComLuv enabled blog that you might comment on.

I’d be interested in how many of you have used this plugin, and would love to hear your success stories with it also.

Starting A Homemade Candle Company

So first of all I want to welcome you to my very first blog post. :)  I hope you enjoy my journey on starting my very first company as well.

Let me introduce myself first,  I am a stay at home mom of an almost 2-year-old little boy. I also have a wonderful husband of 4 years.  I have always wanted to start a little business of my own and I am at a time in my life where this is the perfect timing.

So starting out with making the candles I decided to use palm wax.  Using palm wax brings some snags along the way because of the air bubbles that form.  But with the help of my husband and a lot of practice we have figured out a way to reduce the problem.  I want to use palm wax because I live in Arizona.  It is hot here!!  I need to be able to ship them to customers with out them melting and palm wax melts at a higher heat than most other waxes.

I am going to start with 5 fragrances to start with and see how well that does and when the time comes ill add more to the list.  I will be doing special fragrance for different seasons as well.

Here is a picture of my first practice candle that I made.

I am so excited about my new project,  If any of you have any comments or ideas to help me out I would love to hear from you.  Thanks for reading!
